Ice Age Onyx Marble

Ice Age Onyx Marble is a translucent, banded stone with layers of icy white, cream, and pale blue. Highly translucent, it’s ideal for backlit panels, feature walls, and decorative screens. Soft and delicate—best for low-load decorative uses where dramatic backlighting and thin-slab installation highlight its depth.

Ice Age Onyx (an onyx-type calcite/gypsum stone) is prized for translucency and layered banding that diffuses light—making it exceptional for backlit installations. It’s significantly softer and more porous than marble, and more fragile; handling and fabrication need specialist techniques (thin-slab cutting, resin stabilization, edge reinforcement). The material’s ability to transmit light allows designers to create luminous bars, feature walls, illuminated countertops, and reception desks that read like glowing sculptural elements.

Architectural applications: backlit vanity panels, bar and hospitality fronts, illuminated wall veneers, decorative partitions, lamp shades, and protected occasional tabletops. It’s not recommended for heavy-footfall floors or high-abrasion countertops without reinforcement and protective surfacing. Because onyx often contains natural fissures and voids, resin impregnation and filling are common in fabrication to stabilize the slab and prevent future chipping.

Performance recommendations: use thin LED panels for even backlighting; avoid placing hot cookware or sharp instruments on onyx surfaces; use protective glass or resin overlay for horizontal surfaces if higher durability is needed. Clean with pH-neutral, non-abrasive cleaners; reseal or recoat impregnations as the fabricator recommends. For large spans, plan mechanical support and flexible joints, as onyx is more prone to breakage from substrate movement.

Visually, Ice Age Onyx lends an ethereal, luxurious signature—excellent where dramatic lighting and delicacy are part of the design brief.
